Youth On The Move In The Community was founded in 1991 by the Abyssinian Baptist Church In The City of New York. Youth On The Move (YOTM), was created by the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III. It is designed to offer young people between 6 and 18 years of age opportunities to escape crime and negativity and engage in physical activity through organized sports - with the goal of maintaining educational requirements and creating a winning spirit by increasing self confidence, team building, and communication.
Since the inception of the STEM and Literacy program we have attracted educators and technology experts in the Math, Science, Computer, and Literacy fields, who have committed to building our program with us. Our program provides opportunities for our scholars to play or experiment with science, arts integration, and literacy in fun and engaging ways, which is often difficult to integrate into most classrooms that are focused upon a linear approach to addressing the achievement gap and/or lackluster test scores.
The young adults of Harlem's Youth On The Move dream of becoming professional athletes, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and entrepreneurs. Participation in Youth On The Move has allowed Harlem youth to engage in meaningful competition, establish a pattern of exercise, to understand and practice discipline, and to develop their passions.
